In an act of either admirable confidence or extraordinary denial, the widow of Aaron Spelling, the Hollywood television producer, has put her Los Angeles “manor” up for sale at $150 million (£105 million).

The price — almost enough to bail out a small US carmaker — was decided on by Candy Spelling and her estate agent, who was vetted with the help of her dog.

If Madison, a soft-coated wheaten terrier, did not respond well to prospective candidates, they were crossed off the list, denying them a chance to earn a 3 per cent commission of $4.5 million.
